I'm thinking of a product name of "sick-be-gone" or "Collect-o-guts".

I immediately want one of those now.

But if you look at 1:50 in the linked video, it's pretty clear you don't want to use the ketchup bottle in a Chinese restaurant.
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 05 2019

If a Chinese* restaurant has a ketchup bottle, you don't want to be eating there anyway.

Bun, simply because the idea is nowhere near as disgusting as we feared it might be from the title.

*A restaurant serving Chinese food; a restaurant in China serving Western cuisine (?) would of course be likely to offer ketchup as a condiment.

How does that (in the video) work?
hippo, Feb 05 2019

There's a flexible sheet that wraps around the "blade". The top surface moves backwards (ie, towards the handle).

       Ah, right

A good bit of video trickery, I suspect. There's not even a smudge left, and no indication of any fluid disturbance.

No real world environment. I am very skeptical about general application.

It's a clever gadget alright. The scoop surface needs to be extended at the exact same rate as the scoop material. When that happens surface tension ensures the entire mess is collected. The hydrophobic table probably also helps.

It needs to be extended on top not at all, and on the bottom at twice the rate of the rigid plate part. This is easily accomplished by fixing the top end of the sheet in place and attaching the bottom end to a spring-loaded takeup reel.

This reminds me that I have a few switl-related ideas on my list to post. I've already posted the external airbag one.

But to demonstrate the concept just a strong paper towel (the kind used in 70's comprehensive schools) nailed to a desk should suffice. Simply fold the paper towel under, insert a ruler and make a small pile of ketchup.
