The phrase 'crumpled heap' comes to mind.

Sliding Desktop Icons

Icons that slowly slide down to the bottom of the screen.

A cool option for computer displays would be to have them slide down to the bottom of the screen over time. This would have to happen extremely slowly, of course; I'm thinking maybe a millimeter per hour. Of course, different icons would slide down at different rates; programs containing more information would be "heavier" and therefore slide faster. Alternatively, larger icons could simply be heavier. Optionally, the sliding symbols could leave behind a sticky visible residue that causes the cursor to move a bit slower when it passes over the trail.

This would humanize the desktop a bit, and also force people to give the icons a bit of attention so they don't end up in a pile at the bottom of the display. Or you could just let the icons slowly shift at the bottom of the screen and crystallize into the most efficient pattern...

This would really help me. I currently have 410 items on my desktop and they desperately need sorted out.

Sorting is so last millenium. These days you just tag and search...So I'm told.

Hey now, lets not be downplaying the power of Norman wisdom. It's been working for me for years.

I'd like them to slide down faster the less they were used. Let the detritus just collect at the bottom to be sorted out later, the heavily used icons would never move.
