While following the ongoing conflict in East Timor, it is noticeable that one of their hand weapons can be slightly improved.

The sling-shot is a fairly benign but effective rock pelting tool, but has a drawback in that the projectile is held in place by pinching it between the fingers, which is prone to slipping.

An alternative would be to replace the normally inelastic projectile sling, with an elastic cone of higher elasticity than the rubber tubing that comprises the rest of the sling.

With this adaptation, the projectile can be dropped into the cone and when it is drawn back, held in place by the constricted cone. When fired, the contraction of the cone will add additional velocity.

[Inspired by, but not for use by feuding rebels!]

Google 'glove gun' and you'll see it as baked :)

This, then I'm off to bed. Imagine removing the leather thingy that holds the projectile on a normal slingshot. In its place attach the dismembered finger of a rubber glove. Into this, place a small marble. Then, pull on the tip of the the tapered rubber finger so that the force of your pulling stretches the rubber finger as well as rubber tubes of the sling shot. The marble within the rubber finger, even though you aren't holding onto it, is held in place by the stretched rubber finger (because when you make it longer, it gets narrower). When you release the rubber finger the elastic tubes, and the finger, return to their original state quite rapidly ejecting the marble from within the finger.

In that example the marble would probably get stuck in the finger and stay there. It needs to be open and shaped so that it does not interact with the marble during acceleration and release. The open sling designs are very efficient in this manner in that they "peel" away from the projectile upon release, allowing for an unrestricted flight.

If the marble was farher forward than the point at which you were holding the finger cone thing, the stretched rubber slack will meet the marble and absorb the impact. The marble would have to be as far back as possible, otherwise the potential energy of a piece of stretched latex would be expended immedeately on the surface of the marble instead of gradually throught the mass of the marble, which would make it accelerate.
