Snowbird Data Center

Move servers to colder climates where they're cheaper to cool

Proposed is a low-cost data center that shuts down for two periods each year. During each of these shutdown periods, the servers are physically shipped north or south to the cooler hemisphere. The warmer datacenter would sit dormant with all power shut off, etc.

       For the cost of shipment, you could probably run redundant data centers, one in either hemisphere. Shut down as desired.

       Put the servers on ships. Easily moved, the sea is a gigantic heatsink.

       // pick a pole, any pole //

       or if you want some extant infrastructure & population base for employees just use Alaska or Greenland

       That would work. Might have a third in outer space. Got solar for power, and I understand it's pretty cold year 'round. Upgrades would be a bitch tho.

       well Greenland can fit that bill fairly close too [what] - solar for power (half the time) plus geothermal (all the time) & pretty cold year round too. Upgrades would be less of a bitch ;)

       // outer space. […] I understand it's pretty cold year 'round //

       Cold, yes, but there's no air to let you take advantage of the cold through convection. You have to use radiation only. That's why the ISS's radiators are so large, and why [Vernon] came up with IKECE: [link].
