The Recent 3 page features 12 categories for everything on earth. Business, Car, Computer, Culture, Fashion, Food, Health, Home, Other, Product, Public, and Sport.
Ideas pertaining to the rest of the universe are tucked away in the "Other" category. There, the entire universe, of which our solar
system is but a tiny mote in an insignificant galaxy is filed away, as a mere 25 of 79 possible sub categories. There, the places beyond our murky sky are given the same legitimacy as "Energy: undead."
I understand that the halfbakery is for people, and about people, and we haven't gotten very far beyond those murky skies of ours. I understand that "Space" ideas tend to be a little "kooky," and "Not what the halfbakery is about." I understand that there are "Other sites" for "This kind of thing..." I also understand that Vernon liked to write about space, and most folks thought his ideas were trash.
All the same, I feel like the sheer scale of the universe demands a little more respect than what it's getting here.
Space ideas tend to be significantly different from other "other" ideas. Most "other" ideas find their way in that category because of a failure to provide a category. Most "other" ideas are simple, whimsical, baked... They tend to be light reading, and easily destroyed with a few links to prior art.
Most "Space" ides are complicated, unhumorous, impossible... They tend to be difficult reading, with tenacious supporters who couter every WIBNI and "Bad Science" comment with facts, opinions, and detailed notes transcribed from coctail napkins and scraps of unused toilet paper that have been sitting in a note book for years.
In short, "Other," and "Space" are two very different animals, To keep them in optimum conditions, they should recieve different care, different viewers, and different cages. Keeping them together like this is no more sensible than it would be to keep "Computer" and "Public" together in the same category. [link]

I'd quite like to see a space category - but I don't recognise the problems you bring to light. |
|
| |
First of all, a category doesn't necessarily 'legitimise' an idea - it's just a holder. Plus, space ideas are not necessarily 'kooky', nor are they not what the bakery is about - there are hosts of well received ideas set in space, about space, and which are generally cosmic in nature. If something is bad science, it's bad science - pure and simple. And Vernon (I think) still pops up every now and then, and Im sure there are very few of us who think his ideas are trash (not that it matters) |

Space ideas can be whimsical - not that this is necessarily a criteria for quality (far from it) just as much as they may be serious. |
|
| |
So I support the suggestion(ish), even if I don't agree with much (any?) of the arguments. |
|
| |
I also support the suggestion. Bring on Space: Food: Sauces: Algae: Breakfast |
|
| |
I disagree with the idea as it stands. Looking at the 'Other' category it contains a lot of the sciences and scientific areas as subcategories. |
|
| |
Whether a Science category (that includes Science: space) would be worthwhile is a different matter... |
|
| |
Are you sure we'd have enough room for such a category? |
|
| |
I'm against a "Space" category, because someone is bound to come up with a cosmetic surgery sub-category idea, and then we face the awful prospect of "Space: The Final Front Ear". I'll get me coat. |
|
| |
//Most "Space" ides are complicated// No, not really, they usually occur around the middle of the space month. |

I was under the impression that categorising was reactive rather than editorial. The Sport category was created because there were enough ideas to support it. It's still the runt of the litter: 1171 ideas to Product's 6592. However, Sport is the only category that can get its dinner money stolen by Other, as Other has only 1211 ideas in it. It doesn't look like there's the need, if need is defined as I think it is. |
|
| |
Plus it'd make the recent 3 view look like a right dog's dinner. |
|

I think part of your arguement about seperating ideas based on whimsical and the tendancy for space to get involved would lead me to want a initial two category system for the author to catagorize it as |
|
| |
worthless joke idea and I knew that when I wrote it down. WJI for short |
|
| |
I put a lot of thought into this and I expect everyone to take it seriously or I will cry. IWC for short. |
|
| |
a tag would do. for those busy types that only want to wade through what they can. |
|
| |
Hmm, separate serious and frivolous ideas. Now there.s an idea... Putting them in separate categories otherwise would require re-coding, and re-categorizing of the entire halfbakery... something I would not wish on my worst enemies. |
|
| |
On the other hand voluntary tags on the title might be useful to recommend... when the author has a strong enough opinion. Unfortunately, if someone simply wandered into the halfbakery, they would probably spend several hours asking "What is WJI? What is IWC?" I believe our (mostly) benevolent host strives to keep the site in such a state that random visitors have a fair idea as to what is going on. |

I'm beginning to wonder if just "Other: Mars: Beneficial Destruction" would fit the bill. That's what many of the space ideas seem to be lately.
Not that that's a bad thing. I am actually pro-destruction of Mars for our benefit. Think of all of the engineering and manufacturing jobs that would be created in a program like that. |
