Spandau Ballet Day

The Cut 'Em Down! option.

To cut a long story short: Set up crew-served machineguns, manned by musclebound gunners at pedestrian choke points in cities all over the world, on one day of the year.

Fire gold lightweight foam bullets at them, just to watch them dance. True fun, to be had by all.

Of course, we would have to convince radio stations to play their old hits over and over, for the entire day, just for old times' sake.

Don't try this at home. Or anywhere else, for that matter ... [8th of 7, Jun 22 2012]

       um... er, mwa?

       Spandau Ballet was an 80s New Romantic band.

       It's also a reference to the dance performed by the 11 war criminals who were hanged at Spandau Prison after WWII.

       Hanging is certainly a punishment.

       // Hanging is certainly a punishment. //

       For most, yes. For some, it's a somewhat dubious form of auto-erotic entertainment ... <link>

       We feel obliged to point out, for the education of those few who may - unlikely as it seem - be ignorant of the facts, that a Maschinengewehr 08 ("Spandau") is a recoil-operated water-cooled medium machine gun derived from the original Maxim design and thus // gold lightweight foam bullets // would not provide sufficient recoil momentum to cycle the action.

       We just thought you needed to know that.

       Replaced early in WWII with the MG32.
UnaBubba, Jun 22 2012

       There's also a reference to WWI in the term, wherein soldiers referred to those caught in the beaten zone of a Spandau machinegun as "doing the Spandau Ballet". Black humour.

       What if we gave the gold, foam bullets cores of depleted uranium then?
