       Doesn't even have to be a diamond. Would work great with costume jewelry.

       [dog's b.] I was thinking more on the lines of Compact disc technology . If you don't like the image just grind off the etched surface (reducing the diamond slightly).   

       There would be a facetted cone like surface to etch . The pits of varying depths and positions are on the underside faces of the diamond . The calculated internal reflection pattern off the pits and non pits builds the hologram .   

       Maybe a larger than normal top viewing face might be needed .
