This idea is for a simple sensor to be added to microwave ovens that could pick up on the continuum between well-done popcorn and burnt popcorn, and automatically shut the oven off before it reached the high end of the continuum. See link. Could save Seattle a lot of false fire alarms.

Hmmm. Maybe some sort of mass spectrometer.

A smoke detector will get contaminated, either by particulates or steam or vapourised fat, and stop working. So the idea needs a mass spec, or some sort of electronic "nose" that won't "fatigue" at recurrent high levels of "normal" contaminants.

Not seeing that link, I have to say...

By that time it might be too late. Better to detect the pops, and shut off automatically when they decline to a certain rate.

mine has a humidity detector that senses the corn is popping and then shuts off within a certain time period based on the bag size you selected, works pretty good.

The article doesn't mention why popcorn burns so often in Seattle. Is it a problem with the humidity detector? Fancy Justice Center commercial radiation equipment? Even when I set it at 3 minutes, forget about it, and it's "all done", popcorn turns out fine (maybe slightly charred).

It's not just Seattle. Here in Florida I've worked at companies that had to ban it in microwaves because people kept burning it and stinking up the building.
