Switchable Product Placement In Movies

Ability to change products featured in movies after movie is shot

All products used by the character, restaurant and store signs etc are painted green screen color so products may be superimposed at a later date.

The reason to this would be to offer more flexibility to the movie company in selling its advertising space. Coke might pay to have the main character holding a can of their product until the box office sales reach two hundred million, after which the price goes up. If Coke is not willing to pay this, other products can able to be put in on a highest bidder basis. The characters might meet at a Starbucks in one region and a Peet's in another.

Even if there are no Piggly Wiggly markets in California, a scene shot in San Francisco but shown in the south might show the characters in front of this local chain. Likewise, a scene shot in Tallahassee but playing in San Francisco might show the characters shopping at Safeway fictitiously located in the deep south. Since most people don't travel much, criticisms of this innacuracy would be limited to a few nerds living in their mom's basement posting online rants. "Piggly Wigglys in San Francisco? How insane is that?" Fortunately nobody would ever read these criticisms so they'd go largely un-noticed.

Of course the main reason to do this would be to have a finished movie that lets advertisers bid on the placement. If it looks good, they'll pay more. If it's "Ninja Nuns From Trithalmadore" they can get a bargain.

that's certainly a way to do it (honestly not sure how new) -- however, I think image processing is probably going to make the green screening irrelevant at some not too distance point, i.e. the notion of identifying (and replacing) a 3D texture is not something that is inconceivable.

I think they still use green/blue screen don't they? Haven't been in the biz for a while. Showing my age. Do directors still wear those puffy pants tucked into riding boots while carrying around a crop and wearing a beret?

I gotta get up on the latest technology.

Given that distribution of movies to theaters is going digital, this could be done as easily as identifying the digital bits associated with the images you want to alter, and then providing alternate digital bits. When the movie is in post-production processing, all those alterable places could be digitally tagged in advance.

Re the Impossible Software link, I believe this is match motion software that's been around for ages, but appears to be simplified for home use. It's the thing they use to make a 3d modeled robot walk down the street with live actors running around. They just pick a few points on the live video and have the overlay move with those points.

I think that's what that is. Totally awsome by the way.
