The other day I saw a little boy (maybe 8 or 9) hurrying to catch a school bus. It was in an area where it would be very easy for a child to disappear. (Major road, non-residential area, long grass, near train lines)
He was hurrying, actually more 'scurrying'. It occurred to me he was probably
scared.
A backpack with a built-in computer and some software wizbangery could be made to interface with its wearer to provide directions, reminders, time updates, schedules... and perhaps some occasional reassurance.
Your ten year old son would get a friendly reminder to go straight home from school, rather than dawdling about at the local amusement arcade.
Take one with you when travelling and it can give you directions and point out sites of interest.

I would like one of these when hill walking instead of using a map and compass. |

This could be implemented with the "GPS for the blind" (link pending) perhaps... |

That's the idea, [sufc]. I don't know whether it would require GPS, but it would need to rely on that or some sort of signal triangulation. |

I've been thinking about posting an idea for a backpack coat. I hate having to take backpack off when I have got settled and into the walking groove.
I don't like walking with a map and compass around my neck. I get my mate to wear them and I do the reading. |

Would a plastic pocket, sewn to your shirt, do the same thing? |

Have you been watching Dora the explorer? |

Yeah, get the poor kid to wear a valuable back-pack which makes itself obvious by talking out loud! You may as well give him/her a big sign to carry saying "bully me then rob me". You could achieve what you want with a clever mobile phone / pda combination which could sit in a pocket discreetly and could also be used when its too hot to carry a back-pack. |

Nice thought, [dag]. Probably. |
