Tennis gutters
Sloping gutters channel balls to the edges of the tennis courts

The nets should have two gutters that meet in the centre of the net. They point where they meet will be 30cm above the ground and the end of the gutter at ground level near the post.

Balls that hit the net fall into the gutter and slowly roll to the posts where they are captured by a machine which picks them up and places them in a bowling alley style chute to return them to the players.

All those ball boys and girls would be out of a job. And they train so hard before Wimbledon.

       [hazel] that's progress I'm afraid.

Hazel. They are all children who should be studying for their exams. Good idea humanzee. Presume you'd also have underground channels to field the ball back to the server end?

This is a great idea! Cost would be higher, but well worth it.

blissy - that was way too much information.

The gutter would probably have to be too big, and so a little prohibitive to play. A lot of net shots bounce a good metre or so from the net. Now, if you somehow built the net out of an *incredibly* elastic material so the balls fire right back towards the back of the court that would be something…

Or an incredibly absorbing material that makes all shots fall into the gutter.

But what about balls hit into the net in the middle, under the gutter? (30cm, that's 11+ inches, plenty of room for a bad shot)

And my Ball Dog operation will be put out of business before it even got off the ground.
Anybody need 4 dozen Golden Labs?

thats a great idea but lets say that if the player had moved and the ball rolled past them.....they would have to go get it just like in the first place!you are just making Americans even more lazy and fat.... ok ,well maybe just lazy .
