That-A-Way! Heels

For hikers, boy scouts and Alzheimer's patients.

Hikers, boy scouts and Alzheimer's patients sometimes get lost, causing considerable consternation to rescue services and families.

That-A-Way! Heels are simply small spraycans that strap around the ankle and clip onto the back of your boots, like spurs. They are filled with a brightly coloured liquid that degrades within a week to ten days of exposure to air. Every fifth step triggers the can to spray a "footprint" in the shape of an arrow on the ground, indicating direction of travel.

Easy to follow, simple and effective.

Refills available at all good outdoors stores.

       Good idea...sad that it's necessary.

When I was a sprout, woodsmanship was a cool thing all kids were taught. This was only forty years ago. Getting lost was something you had to work at, and if you did, you knew how to survive.

Now all they know is file-swapping.....sad.
normzone, Feb 10 2005

that detour idea could have used these...
po, Feb 10 2005

I guess I should stipulate that they are rugged enough to take a few knocks, as the heels of hiking boots do.
UnaBubba, Feb 10 2005

You could spray paint rude words on the road without anybody knowing
benfrost, Feb 10 2005

       Or ETERNITY, a million times.

I hadn't seen Detour Dots before. Interesting that we've come up with similar ideas. I was wondering what [po] was on about.
UnaBubba, Feb 10 2005

I think the arrows should point the other way so that anyone bumping into the wayward soul would know which way to go to return him/her.
FarmerJohn, Feb 10 2005

Provided that is adopted as a standard then I don't see a problem there. It would necessitate a name change, to This-A-Way! Heels, I guess.

Unless you managed to mount them to the toes of the shoes, which would make them This-A-Way! Toes, I suppose.
UnaBubba, Feb 10 2005

The hiker may walk home and be inadvertly followed by hundreds of alzheimer patients and boy scouts over the next few days.

Unless, of course you a have different colors & patterns for everyone.

Also, I'd imagine the kids may have too much fun spraying each other with this as they walk.
sophocles, Feb 10 2005

I'm not sure how well this would work for many Alzheimer patients. They may not remember what the "footprint" is supposed to be telling them.
Noexit, Feb 10 2005

There must be a more eloquent solution.
Blumster, Feb 10 2005

For Al's patients I imagined that they wouldn't remember what they were for, but that the people looking for them would find it easier to find them.
UnaBubba, Feb 11 2005

I've worked with many Alzheimer's patients. For some reason, the first thing many of them do when they first taste freedom is to get naked.

However, this is still a good idea, because many of them do leave their shoes and watches on. At least you'd be able to track them up to the point where they decided to go sky-clad.

It would be a good demonstration of Brownian motion, anyway.
bwringer, Feb 11 2005

(Yikes, brwinger! What an interesting problem to have.)
From the title, I thought this would be heels that, with the help of a GPS system and a gyroscope, gently nudge you towards going into the right direction.
jutta, Feb 11 2005

A more low-tech version of this was used by certain prostitutes in ancient Greece. Their heelprint said "Follow me."
robinism, Feb 11 2005

AH! Yes! To use them for tracking an Alzheimer patient. That's much more reliable.
Noexit, Feb 11 2005

dot-matrix shoes! With a linked PDA, you could leave "Hurry Up" messages for the slower members of your party, or... the dye could leave taggants with information that you should have left at home in the first place. (destination, expected return time... yada yada)
spacer, Feb 11 2005

Also very useful for children in crowded places. They can wander away and get lost very easily (ok, maybe that was just my childhood experience).
Pericles, Feb 11 2005

Nothing so technical, [jutta]. It was inspired by a TV ad for a private Careflight Rescue service. The presenter was talking about the difficulty of tracking someone in a rocky area.
UnaBubba, Feb 12 2005

This might not be so suitable for autumn rambles round my neck of the woods, it might me *edit I meant be!* a neo Hansel and Gretel moment. Great for rocks as stated though.
gnomethang, Feb 12 2005

If only golf balls left a path.
UnaBubba, Feb 12 2005

Ooof! That hurt! Or maybe it was the corvids flying down and picking them up?
gnomethang, Feb 12 2005

       Not recommended for indoor use.
nick_n_uit, Feb 12 2005

Gotta say, I like the idea, but I do prefer the link provided by [calum], better, and more bakery, bakerish.
blissmiss, Feb 13 2005

       You've outdone yourself, [bris].
FarmerJohn, Feb 13 2005

Don't blame the crows, [gnome]. I have to agree, [bris] sure did good here.
UnaBubba, Feb 13 2005

Maybe could also use red for the left foot and green for the right foot, and spray a simple dot.
Ling, Feb 13 2005

Damn, Bris, people would follow those legs anywhere!
k_sra, Feb 14 2005

Though the left one will eventually be much stronger than the right.
Worldgineer, Feb 14 2005

       <<more elegant solution>>

Simply print their name on 'em.
RayfordSteele, Feb 14 2005

while bris' drawing is very glam, I can't picture those heels on boyscouts, hikers and alzeimers patients, as stated by the author.
dentworth, Feb 14 2005

Haven't much imagination, do you?  ;-)
bristolz, Feb 14 2005

That was the very reason I was so impressed. If [bristolz] goes hiking in those shoes then she's my kinda girl.
UnaBubba, Feb 14 2005

I wouldn't tell those legs to take a hike.
FarmerJohn, Feb 14 2005

Liar, yes you would, and then you would offer to be the guide...
blissmiss, Feb 14 2005

       "haven't much imagination"

well actually [Bris], I had this whole anno about Benny Hill and the boyscouts, but then thought I should perhaps not...
dentworth, Feb 14 2005

       Oh. Well, okay then.
bristolz, Feb 14 2005

I imagine far fewer hikers would get lost, if they all wore high heels like [bris] has drawn.
