Tire Pressure Release Valve
They're on everything else, why not tires?

This idea seems so common that you'd think it'd already be out there, but I can't find it anywhere, so here goes.

Everyone freaks out when they think of overinflating a tire on their car, bicycle, or other vehicle. There are horror stories of decapitation from exploding tires everything else. I think it's only common sense that high pressure release valves be installed in the side walls of tires using a stem similar to the one used to put air in the tire. These price of such valves should be negligible when added on the price of already expensive tires. The valve automatically releases air when the tire is filled to its rated capacity. It's possible that the valve could be built into the original tire stem itself. Of course, it's obvious that people would stop using tire gauges altogether, relying solely on the emergency valves. I'm not sure if that would be a good or bad thing.

Sometimes it's to your benefit to inflate tyres beyond their rated capacity. Harder tyres mean less rolling resistance and better fuel economy, for instance.

Tyres heat up with prolonged use, increasing the internal pressure. They revert to the desired pressure once they cool down. Messing with that is just a lot of work for nothing.

I like it. To overcome UnaBubba's concerns, set the release pressure to the tire's absolute maximum pressure rather than just the recommended pressure.

Install a second valve stem, and attach a tyre deflator (~$15AU each).. Easy.

I only know one brand, so search for Staun tyre deflators on the internet. Basically an adjustable PRV that attaches to a tyre valve stem.

They're used by lazy, gadget-obsessed people to deflate their tyres before four-wheel driving on sand, etc. I just do it by hand, but hey, that's just me.

It is obvious why this will not work:

When the car hits a bump or a pot hole or WHATEVER, the pressure in the tire is for a moment much increased. With your valve installed I think it would take a five minute drive before you need to refill the tires.

These are baked, Race drivers use them all the time to vent excess pressure caused by tire heating on the track.

Do you know anyone who has ever had a tyre explode due to over-pressure?

//Do you know anyone who has ever had a tyre explode due to over-pressure?// I know of two people: one guy kept on inflating his tires (he got confused between the KPa and the PSI gauges). Another guy I know left his highly inflated bike wheel in a hot car during summer.
