An old fashioned alternative for traffic lights.
A four* sided mechanical cop suspended over the centre of a junction that directs traffic.
Each queue of traffic is greeted by a shiny, smiling coppers face with rosy red cheeks. Below the face sits a bulging blue tunic with shiny brass buttons,
above a tall coppers helmet, shared by all four faces. Each face is accompanied by a mechanical right arm that rises to direct traffic to halt or lowers and swings to wave it on. All made from metal and painted in high gloss, of course.
Oh and theres none of that electric elastic-trickery involved here. Each cop is a piece of high-precision clockwork engineering, powered by a wound spring. The timing of the movements are impeccable, the actions precise if somewhat stiff. Every night the Master of Traffic walks the streets with his/her huge key, slotting it into the kerbside posts from which the cops hang, winding up the cops for their next days work.
*or however many roads meet. here are some guys who could be used as 'models'

+ I like old-timey stuff. |

Now, how to hide the key? |

There are some cities that have real people who try to imitate clockwork traffic direction. There is one person per junction, and they perform a routine that turns them 90 degrees each time. I wasn't quite sure if anyone took a blind bit of notice. It wasn't for tourists, either. Angang, China. Near the N. Korean border. |

+ for anything with a spring in its step. |

this would look pretty bizarre from any
acute angle to the cop. also, the more
complicated it is, the harder it is for repair
and upkeep and the more things that can
go wrong. |

i do like the idea of clockwork figures
directing traffic. it reminds me of Phil
Foglio's Girl Genius and the tocks that
exist in it. |
