Traffic Kite Surfing & Ballooning

Dangerous, but exhilarating

Last weekend, at the beach, there were a lot of kite surfers.

On the road home there were a lot of large, fast vehicles. Watching the disruption of the air, above the highway, I realised there was probably a way to hitch a ride on the moving "river" of air that was being dragged along with the traffic.

Kiting, or ballooning, along that "river" may be a way to increase highway capacities and have a lot of fun doing it.

Grassboarding, apparently, is the name for land-based kite surfing. [DrCurry, Oct 14 2005]

       Sounds suicidal to me.

I dont believe there's much net flow, instead its more just turbulence. The air sits mainly where it is, just diverts around the vehicles, creating pockets of pressure. I think you'd do a lot of rocking forward and back, but in the end would not really go anywhere (except under the wheels of a semi)

       Which isn't all that bad.

Kinda my point, in the end, [jdn]. Think of it as nature's human garden, weeding itself.

I just finished reading Snow Crash, a great book where people with jobs as a Kourier would get around by, essentially, latching onto cars and riding behind them on a skateboard. This idea seems similar, i like it!

[Kenry52], you're thinking of Back to the Future I, II, and III.

The wind caused by trucks and cars is very turbulent - I would guess that would make kite surfing difficult, if not impossible. But then I could never get the hang of regular windsurfing, anyway.
