Trains and Frames
eases the pain of waiting at RR crossings

A friend suggested this idea during a discussion about complaints of long waits at a couple of main crossings in our town. On a main street, in a different part of our town, a business has a large high definition video sign. The sign runs three or four repeated messages. One of the messages, I still don’t know what it’s for, shows an old steam powered passenger train heading almost straight towards the roadway. It’s a little bit disturbing really because it grabs your attention and seems that it could be a traffic hazard. My friend suggest that the RR could put one of these at the side of the crossing gates, maybe enlarge it by 3 or 4 times, shouldn’t be a problem, and when the gates go down a video begins. The audio would be a low frequency radio signal, that anyone could pick up on their car radio, but for real high quality sound you would need a membership or special adapter for your stereo that could really blast, available for low annual rate. Just what kind of video clips would be played would be up to the RR, but probably a combo of music, movie, and cartoon clips. When the gates go up the show’s over. I really like this idea, but know it’s probably a “will never happen”

Beat you to it. See linky.

Ok, lets change that view on the screen to something more practical, like split screen views from the front and tail of the train that is passing so people will know what they're up against, when they can expect the end, what it would take, how far they would have go, to get around a stopped train. This could aid emergency vehicles and save gas by letting people know when it's about time to go, so they can shut down their engines during the wait.

[oyea6] Like train wait time, etc. Would be good. Also - directions to either the nearest rail road overpass, or alternate route would be useful too.
