Transparent Shingles

Designed for upscale sheds, awnings, garages and covered bridges as well as houses, these are roofing tile shingles made from a flexible, clear, weather-resistant plastic. Fastened to the roof frame by regular roofing nails and to each other by (clear) caulking strips (included), these elegant tiles provide complete weatherproofing comparable to asphalt tiles. Mix and match with regular tiles to create a well-lit space underneath.

Available in standard shingle flats sizes as well as individual shakes for the more traditional roofs. When ordering please specify translucency, opacity, tinting requirements, as well as texturing: smooth, pebbled or striated (shakes only).

See our catalogue for examples of some of the artistic yet practical framework techniques that can make your structure look as good from the outside as it does on the inside.

Transparent and translucent shingles are on the market.

[marked-for-deletion] redundant with link. sorry but the ideas are identical.

[po] Vernon does indeed get detailed about the insulation and inner barrier but devotes only a single generic sentence to the outer covering, towhit:

"Then we use acrylic/plexiglas plates (or equivalent thereof) to cover the rafters and form the outer roof surface.".

Is that what you find identical ?

[ldischler] link please, I Googled and couldn't find one that actually would work with and as, existing roof shingles or shakes; found plenty that *said* "shingle" though.

       [ldi]

Your first link is to a building with overlapping 8x12' glass panels on the walls; even if they were actually on the roof they still aren't even close to being standard roofing tiles or shakes.

Your second link points to corrugated fibreglass with 2" corrugations, which generally looks like crap. Still not standard roofing tiles.

Your third link looks better but it's still 2" corrugated, not at all like standard roofing tiles.

[post edited to include "flexible"] and <link> to what I mean.

       um, both are see-thru roofs!

My parents' barn (in England) has small areas of glass roof tiles amongst the stone ones.

Nifty, I spent a summer in a house with overlapping glass windows mounted on horizontal stringers in the mudroom... very inexpensive but looked neat. For this one I'm trying for a skylight that's not only flush with the roof but literally fits right in, since it's the same size and shape as the other tiles. Only caveat of course is that you may have to saw out some of the substrate and tarpaper, to actually let light in. Still not near as much bother as discrete skylight assemblies.

The logical solution is for half-silvered glass roof tiles (shingles).

These would (a) reflect excess heat in the summer, and (b) allow some light into the roof space, saving on illumination.

What exactly do you see through these transparent shingles? The underlayment? The plywood?

//What exactly do you see through these transparent shingles?//

People in glass houses shouldn't throw orgies.

yeah, when they start throwing stones on all those vulnerable nude bodies...

[ldischler] if you like you can read either the anno I made just before your "what exactly do you see..." one, or the post, itself.

[8/7] thought about UV opacity, but for IR, I just imagined transparent (since I live in the snowbelt). Whatever the trans. spectrum of quartz is might be useful since the pebbled ones use quartz pebbles.
