Under-rug Vacuum Cleanerbot

A very flat robot cleans rugs/carpet from underneath.

A robot is made up of several flat discs with tapered edges. The discs are linked together with pistons allowing the robot to inchworm underneath a rug.

The disc on one end is a wet/dry vacuum pointed upward. It also sucks water in from the edges to act like a mop. The middle discs house the water resevoir. The disc on the other end houses the power cord, which can reel inward.

This robot solves the problem of getting a deep down clean all the way to the bottom.

And it would look really cool squirming around down there.

Especially when you have chemically enhanced friends visiting.

Sorry, [IJK], I have to vote against this. Carpet backings (at least, those that I've seen) are only porous enough to let very tiny particles pass, if any at all. So, it might be useful for cleaning up (or cleaning down, as the case may be) spilled confectioner's sugar; but I think it would only suck sand, crumbs, fuzz, etc. deeper into the carpet without actually capturing them, making it harder to clean later with a conventional vacuum.

I like the under-carpet inchworm locomotion, though-- it might make a good cat toy.

If the carpet backing is a problem, how about a similar under-rugpet robot which just sneezed violently from time to time, thereby sending the dirt up through the carpet in a little cloud?

Of course, most of the dirt would settle back onto the carpet, but over time an equilibrium state would be achieved in which the carpet was virtucally dust-free.

Best make sure you don't have Roombatoid Arthritis before getting carpet tunnel surgery though, or resulting complications could lead to shagged tendons.

How about "Carpet Zippers" so you can just open the carpet and vacuum under it, then re-zip it closed? BB

Now all we need is a "lift up the edge and shove it under"-sweeper-bot.
