Undo Delete Button

Maybe there's already a way to do this...?

Several of us have done it. Deleting annotations and links with a single slip of the mouse, or finger on a touchscreen, by mistake. Then, when we realize we've done it, we apologize, and sometimes, if we can remember what it said (unlikely with links) we repost them in another anno. By then, the anno stream gets discombobulated and out of order and thus hard for later readers to follow. So I'd like an Undo Delete button, over there on the left side of the screen uner the Idea heading, for when we realize we've screwed up.

Note: the button would be visible at all times, but grayed out and non-clickable when viewing a page over which you don't have control. On pages where you don't have control, a smaller version of it would appear next to it for undeleting your own annotations, but only if it was you who deleted it.

Moderators, please regard this as an actual request.

Hey [21], I thought my anno brought up a valid point; you didn't have to delete it. I suppose you'll just delete this one too...

Some hot heads around here may think that means they could *delete* their accounts, and then "undelete" them. Not that I would know about that sort of thing...cranky, impulsive, bastards...sniff sniff...

Just put a warning in the confirmation window that pops up saying something along the lines of "WARNING: THIS ACTION CANNOT BE UNDONE WITH THE 'Undo Delete' BUTTON. Do you still wish to delete your account?".

I expect [jutta] deletes items when you ask her to, rather than flagging things for deletion. An undelete probably isn't viable.

Due to similar issues in the past, the account deletion process asks "are you sure" before completing. Maybe she can/will do that for other deletions as well.

That would be a viable alternative. I still think a quick-fix button would be a useful feature, though.

// If it did, then so what? One less idiot to worry about. Satisfying indeed!

This is you from a discussion about whether it would be a good idea to post a miniature-molotov-cocktail recipe on this site or not, on the subject of some idiot getting hurt.

So, you think people should be held responsible for their actions. Unless it's something important, ... like you accidentally deleting an annotation on the halfbakery?

See, my priorities run the other way 'round. I think deleting annotations is a pretty minor screwup, whereas putting some kid's eye out with shrapnell from a heated exploding alcohol bottle is a major thing that one should avoid. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on our values and priorities.

Well first of all, as has been pointed out in the other post, the Bangers probably wouldn't even work. Second, it's really no different than a slew of other weapon ideas that have popped up here and you don't seem to have taken the others all that seriously. Third, what on Earth has that got to do with this idea? Yes, it's a minor screwup, that's what makes it such an oft- occurring one. It's the little things in life that frequently are the most irritating. Sad but true.

This is what's wrong with today's digital media generation of not only youngsters today, but everyone using today's technology. There's a general growing atrophy of any remnant of ability to make a commitment - a wasting away of the ability to edit - a de-evolution of the facility to make a decision and go forward with it irreversibly.

21, you really should get out more.

I don't think, say, Rembrandt ever asked for an 'undo' feature for his oil paints. You could argue that there shouldn't even be a 'delete' button for annotations - mistakes, misguided humour, and angry retorts are all part of the rich creative tapestry that is the Halfbakery.
