Weed Growing in Crack

Do not attempt.

So I was walking around and I saw a weed growing in a crack in some pavement. It was a bit dark so when I first saw it, I thought it was a piece of trash that needed to be properly put in a trash bin. But then I recognized it, and for no particular reason I described it aloud, even though I was alone: "Weed growing in crack."

With those words in my ears it occurred to me that they could be interpreted differently, and so off I went to the HalfBakery to post this.

What happens if marijuana is grown, using crack cocaine as fertilizer (not the only fertilizer, of course)? Would the plant be poisoned and die? Would it survive and produce an unusually potent product? Whatever the result, we can be certain of one thing: It Will Be Highly Illegal. So, wonder about the outcome all you like, but please do not attempt!

       It's a water-soluble alkaloid; the action path is inhibiting monoamine uptake, affecting the blockade of the dopamine transporter protein.

       That system doesn't exist in plants; most likely, the organism will simply break down the molecule and use the bits for something it wants, or just fail to absorb it because it's not recognized as useful.

       a little disappointed.. I was expecting something involving the rectal insertion of daffodil bulbs

       // please do not attempt! //

       1. Daffodils aren't generally classified as "weeds".

       2. That's a really, really ugly image, [Skew].

       1. a weed is anything (plant wise) that's somewhere you don't want it, so I think that classifies as such.. for me at least, I can't speak for anyone else

       2. it is rather isn't it, consider me suitably ashamed

       // somewhere you don't want it, //

       That's certainly covered by your first suggestion ...

       // I can't speak for anyone else //

       How about a correspondance course in ventriloquism, then ?

       // suitably ashamed //

       That's OK, but could you not manage abashed ? Or indeed just bashed ?

       abashed I can do - bashed will have to wait until next Friday night & the attainment of a suitable level of inebriation (& the concurrent lack of tact involved) to annoy other patrons.. sufficiently

       Perhaps you could grow the Cannabis hydroponically and add the cocaine to the reservoir prior to harvest. The idea being that the plant would simply take the compound up its shoots through capillary action.

       That should be easy enough to try.

       Any hemp plant would do. Grow it conventionally to maturtity, then remove from the growing medium and wash. Place the roots in the hydroponic solution for a few days and provide strong light.

       Every day, remove a leaf and assay it for the presence of the target compound. From that, it should be easy to extrapolate the uptake rate.

       Proof-of concept could be done with nothing more than a hemp plant and some caffeine solution.

       I wonder if [jutta] ever thought she would read a discussion on whether a daffodil growing out of a person's ass, would indeed be considered a true "weed", or not, when she gave birth to the bakery. Wow.

       I was googling to see if spinosad (an antiparasitic) were effective against mites. I was interested in animal use but to my surprise I learned that spinosad can be taken up by plants and is effective systemically against spider mites, a plant pathogen.

       Perhaps other drugs could be taken up by plants to treat the plant or things that consume the plant. Or flavors. Flavored drugs?
