With everything we now know about tobacco, anyone who smokes anyway must be suffering from a form of mental illness. So why hedge about it?
"WARNING: SMOKING IS A SIGN OF MENTAL ILLNESS. PLEASE SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP BEFORE YOU INJURE OR KILL YOURSELF."
Annotation:

I don't smoke but I'll play devil's advocate ... |
|
| |
So we should presumably also have:
'Driving is for nut-cases. Many cars pile into others and the driver's are killed. Only mental people drive'. |
|
| |
Eating a bacon sandwich is for absolute loonies. Your just inviting a cholesteral problem. What are you crazy? |
|
| |
Walking in the hills is only for the suicidal .. last year 7 people were struck with lightening. |
|
| |
etc. etc. Sorry (-). You can't insult people into changing their minds about smoking. You can only keep educating them and hope they form their own conclusion. |
|
| |
(Everyone also remember this isn't a smoking/no-smoking argument. Its also not a 'should smoking be legal' argument. It's an 'how to persuade people to stop smoking' argument. I think calling them 'thick' or 'mental' isn't gonna get us very far). |
|
| |
[Ander] is not far off. Most people who
smoke (and lets face it, cigarettes are
not 'enjoyable' like a cigar or a good
brandy) do so because they took it up
to 'fit in' and stick with it due to a
predisposition to addiction. |
|
| |
WARNING: Smoking is a potential sign
of social insecurity and/or a tendancy to
addictive behaviour. |
|
| |
Like other substance use problems, 'nicotine dependence' is actually a diagnosable psychiatric disorder already. Since it's obviously not a 'mental illness' as popularly understood, though, a warning like this would be misleading. (So, yeah, it'll probably happen eventually.) |
|
| |
Interestingly, smoking rates are ridiculously high among people with serious mental illnesses, especially schizophrenia. I don't think anyone's had any luck suggesting that smoking actually causes mood and psychotic disorders rather than the opposite (nicotine as "self-medication"), but there's a possible link with, say, anxiety disorders (nicotine being a stimulant and all). |
|
| |
There is a pretty obvious difference between smoking and other avoidable risks, though. Taking a drug once is an avoidable risk; taking it compulsively despite health problems and efforts to stop might suggest a problem (not insanity or irrationality -- a problem). |
|
| |
I agree that it wouldn't work in practice. I'm not totally sure it works as satire, either. |
|
| |
[timbeau] //lets face it, cigarettes are not 'enjoyable' like a cigar or a good brandy// how subjective. i've never tried an enjoyable brandy or cigar, only nasty ones, but i do enjoy my ciggies. the revised warning is about right though. |
|
| |
this must be a REALLY bad idea; an anti smoking idea with no croissants, amazing. |
|
| |
This is a fucking joke. But I'm sure your youth group leader is proud of you for stepping up to Evil Tobacco, [Ander]. |
|
| |
I'm just waiting for "WARNING:
SMOKING CAUSES TSUNAMIS." I mean,
do you have any idea how many people
smoke out east? |
|
| |
Oh, and [marked for deletion] advocacy.
Aside from everything else. |
|
| |
Good call, [Ander]. Smoking is pretty much for people too stupid to care about the people around them. |
|
| |
What's with the incredible number of anti-cigarette ideas popping up on the recent page all of a sudden? Edit: Just figured it out. Here's looking at you [disbomber]. |
|
| |
This is so obviously advocacy. As [britboy] pointed out, you could say the exact same thing about people who eat fast food. Calling all people who smoke nutcases is something far more prejudicial than I'd expect on the HB. [timbeau]'s version is to the point and truthful whereas the original is simply intended to insult. |
|
| |
Also, with all due respect [UnaBubba],although a lot of people do smoke without thought to the people around them. To generalise the actions of smokers is unfair. Personally I used to smoke but only on my own or in the company of other smokers as I, and many others, may choose to smoke but have no intention of inflicting the consequences of our habit on others. |
|
| |
For that matter, [Una], you don't have to
be stupid to be antisocial. The movies
are full of evil geniuses - I just never
got the funding. |
