Recently, someone contacted me regarding a halfbakery idea of mine, Nanotube Maille. He said he'd been looking for it all his life, it was just what he wanted, us chain-maille-ers got to stick together... and he was very excited to hear that I'd mastered such a technique, now how can he get some? He was quite polite, and excited about my new, but nonexistent invention.

I was rather flattered, although the clear fact is that it will not be possible for me to provide him with the desired service, since we're still working on how to fuse Carbon fulllerene tubes end to end to provide the links for my nano maille. All in all, a rather spectacular misunderstanding, for which I hope he will fund me 4.1 billion dollars in order to overcome this one small obstacle in the way to his desired product.

With that done we will be able to invent the nano-mandrels, nano-rivets, and nano-apprentices necessary to create nano-maille.

Sadly, my correspondent was unable to provide me with the needed funding, but I've been given hope from this small transaction. My hope is that Halfbakers will have a good place to share their own experiences with real-world individuals contacting them in regards to their new halfbakery inventions.

       Call for a list, perchance?

angel, Apr 04 2008

[angel] Relax we don't have to be rule Nazis all the time, besides I see this as more of a water cooler story collection than a list.

I've had one direct RE: and one indirect. The direct one was from a guy who had some patents for high voltage electrodes and wanted to chat about the chemistry of Electrolysis based on some commentary I had made on the AC Electrolyzer idea. The second one was from Jutta but the issue was that my idea for a bird feeder meter had the same name as a trademarked product for feeding deer for hunters and they were concerned that people might become confused about my idea being the same as their product(don't ask me how) That one ended up with me changing the name to the Bird-Seed-O-Meter.

[ye_river_xiv] you should check out one of the recent issues of Discover. They had a neat article about Graphene which is a new (not really) form of Carbon that they are now starting to play with. In particular it might allow them to actually observe quantum tunneling outside of a black hole. I still haven't come up with an interesting way to use it that is worthy of the HB though.

Don't worry [j hombre], I suspect that if [angel] was really out for a [m-you-know-what] he'd be right at the front with the big-hats-with-buckles brigade and demanding a trial for the idea.
And we'd all be behind him with pitchforks...

How about "halfbakery: vs the real world", "halfbakery: users: details" or halfbakery: goldmine"?

I've had people ask about a few of my ideas, most notably my "Park Here flag". I'm still not rich.

phoenix, Apr 04 2008

       Who's rich?

blissmiss, Apr 04 2008

       Not me.

The only random HB-related correspondence I've had was about my "Scar Stories" idea, from a self-professed scar fetishist who wanted to know if there was such a site. She was very nice: I felt like a bit of a spoilsport having to disentangle fantasy from reality for her.

lostdog, Apr 04 2008

Quantum tunneling has been observed. It is the phenomenon behind atomic force microscopy, for example.

       Who's gotta scar fetish?

daseva, Apr 04 2008

Most e-mail to me comes from students regarding research projects or general homework help. The only exception that comes to mind was from a guy that starts companies by getting manufacturing sites, investors, and inventive people together to make products. He was interested in my Seaweed Power idea, but nothing I could think up was a good fit with the type of manufacturing plants he had in mind.

The only time I've been contacted about a HB idea so far is when some ninja pirates warned me not to reveal anything else about the modus operandi they use in their guano-smuggling operations. They were quite insistent.

On the other hand, I regularly get stray inquiries about how to grow fuchsias, but that's because an author of a 'how to grow fuchsias' book shares my name, not for any HB-related reason.

imaginality, Apr 04 2008

You fool! You've given away your identity. Now the ninja pirates will be able to track you down (or perhaps the unfortunate fuchsia expert).

Worldgineer, Apr 04 2008

I've been contacted, (I assume you mean by non-HB'ers) regarding my Dolphin Language idea.
Someone took Aquatic Fauna and marketed it as a product called Terraquarium,
and Treethedral was published in an Arborsmith newsletter but no one ever contacted me first. (I was still tickled)

       Oh yeah.
Someone emailed me not to long ago about an anno I made about designing a one-size-fits-all bra. Apparently this person is making the idea. I told them I would be happy to lend a hand or two.

I've been contacted a few times about my solar tracking device. I've had to explain each time that it is only a concept and poorly thought-out one at that.
