"This is a recording of a bird" Recording

Alert nearby birdwatchers that you are not a real bird

Serious birdwatchers today often carry an ipod or tape player, and they play recordings of the songs of special birds in order to bring those birds closer. It fools the birds, even bringing them in from out of sight.

But the problem is, nearby birdwatchers might hear the tape recording and *also* be fooled into thinking that such-and-such rare bird is lurking nearby. This is especially likely in a park where several independent groups of birdwatchers are walking around.

I suggest a standard sound which is clearly man-made, to be interspersed with the bird song recordings, that lets other birders know that this is just a tape. Birds will just ignore the superfluous sounds, but humans will be very, very grateful.

The extra sound should be high-pitched, so that it is audible when and only when the birdsong recordings are audible, to an outside person.

I once drew a cartoon about a birder, playing a recording of an elusive Aztec Thrush and hearing a distant answer, searching for hours only to discover another birder playing another recording of the same bird.

Bill Oddie nearly fell over last Spring Watch when he heard the sound of a rare bird only to discover it were a recording"

Somewhat bizarrely, this is baked in the form of Dominik Eulberg's album (for want of a better word) Heimische Gefilde, though the twitcher tell is that said bird calls are broken up by extended minimal techno choons, which may be more banging than the average swampside hide can handle.

What do you do when there's a lyrebird around, and it learns to imitate the recording notifier, just as it has learned to imitate the sound of chainsaws and camera shutters?

Ooh, now that's evolution! No human would go near it and lyrebirds (or mockingbirds) would easily take over the world.

So, not the audio equivalent of "Ceci n'est pas un pipe", then? I'd prefer it with a surrealist, existentialist twist.
