a fleet of uav's could be deployed over a scattered area to swarm out a target.

the only way to do this at a distance and quickly is by plane.

a b-52 be set up to deploy at least a couple hundred over a radius of 30 miles to detect everything in the quadrant.

of course, swarm behaves in intelligent coordination (and requires communications technology to enable large data streams to be transfered from one to all other submersibles quickly and without interruption.

swarm comes together in formation to be recovered by ship or helicopter, or ...to self destruct or, just hide away for a while.

What is a 'hot' ocean spot? What do these things do? And wouldn't this be a "submersible unmanned aerial vehicle"?

Start with a sonobouy. Put it underwater where it can't communicate. Then make it move so that its own noise masks its hearing. Presto.

UAV stands for "unmanned AERIAL vehicle." That said, I'm pretty sure there are unmanned submarines that have bombs on them.

baked in fiction. Dale brown's dreamland piranha The difference there is that they drop one unmanned sub into the water. this sub uses en unconventional fish like propulsion system so it doesn't mask it's hearing. it uses sound to communicate with buoys on the surface(using ultra short bursts). Buoys being dropped ahead of it by, you guessed it, a B-52. Though this one had been pimped out with really great wepons/stealth tech/ECM's and two UAV fighter escorts.

I think that you may as well just deploy a mine like package

How about "Underwater Autonomous Vehicle"?
