This is an idea to help cool really hot cities and so reduce the money spent on air conditioning.

A small fleet of aircraft criss-cross the sky high above a really hot city. They do this in such a way that all of their contrails merge to form an unbroken broken blanket of cloud above the city. This acts like a sun shade so helping to keep the city cool.

Would the energy consumed by the planes be less than the energy saved in airconditioning?

agreed. makes it hot at night too. better to live with the sun and make your buildings more efficient. For the energy cost i suspect you could easily beat the heat by conventional means for far less. (just boiling that much water, forget about the planes, etc.)
