at 20, 35, 50, 65, 70, 85....the dashboard light turns different colors.
red 20
yellow 35
blue 50
green 65
violet 80
the dash, or a light on top of the steering wheel has a nice light very visible to the driver that allows him to see his speed without even looking at the speedometer. when
you're driving in the red speed as you approach yellow.......the red gets brighter.....the fast you go, the brighter your color gets, until it finally switches to the next band.
if you want to get fancy, you can allow the driver to customize which colors show up at which speed bands.
i think this would be a great way of helping drivers keep track of speed without taking their eyes of the road no?
zeev The GSA dash
http://www.mattysk..../picture/gsa218.jpg You can sort of see the speedo in the right hand box under the ridiculous fault finding chart. [wagster, Oct 10 2007]

Great idea - simple, useful, cheap. I'd set mine green until 35, amber till 80 and red until 160. After that it wouldn't matter because my eyes would be shut. |
|
| |
I don't think that this would be an accurate enough indicator, and it might cause some drivers to want to speed or maybe even go too slow to get it to display a certain color. |
|
| |
alternatively, the rainbow color band could be hidden under a sliding window that widens as you excelerate. and please be sure to leave the numbers on it as [BJS] said. + |

[k_sra]'s plan could have been baked by a five year old with poster paints on my first car (a Citroen GSA) which displayed it's speed with numbers (in a pseudo-futuristic font) printed on a rotating cylinder. Just paint over the numbers. (link) |

Assuming it isn't already baked, then it certainly should be. This is a great idea. |
|
| |
I like it, as I was going *violet* the other day. + |
|
| |
..oddly enough- I was taking photos from my car and took a picture. [see link] It would be much prettier in violet. |
|
| |
If you go fast enough, the oncoming drivers headlights start turning blue... |
|

Can't find a link for it, but the Opel Manta 400 had exciting 4-color instrument faces. There are video clips to be found that will show the faces briefly. |

woah! slow down there, [xandram]! you're into the invisible light spectrum. |
|

//..oddly enough- I was taking photos
from my car and took a picture// You
took a photograph of your speedometer
because you were doing 80mph? Try that
in the UK and the photo will be shaky -
you'll have have a dozen cars up your arse
in no time. |

I wish I was cool like a speeding driver. |
|
| |
Anything that stops me having to take my eyes off the road (particularly in school zones where the speed limit in Aus is 40 km/hr - mayhaps a special color for this) is v v good + + from me. |
|

[Maxwell] I didn't take the photo *because* I was going 80 mph (130 kph), I was getting ready to take a photo inside of an upcoming tunnel and just thought to snap the speedometer for fun. I go faster than 80 sometimes, but don't always have my camera with me. ;)
...maybe I *knew* I could use the photo for something...wee-oooh
[Text] 80 mph is the norm for highways with a 65 mph speed limit. |
|
| |
You're starting to sound like Paparazzi [xandram] |
|
| |
This would be great if it could be dynamically updated for the local speed limit (I realize this would require broadcast or really accurate maps with GPS). You would then set it to something like blue, 5+ mph under, yellow, 5-0 mph under, orange 0-5 over, and red 5+ over. |

That was a good laugh [Texticle]. |
