friends agree on passwords.
persons in the phone's directory memory have an optional password. sms to and from that person encode/decode automatically and transparently with that password otherwise normal plaintext is used. Verizon Wireless SMS snooping bug

Actually, a security research firm just the other day discovered that it is possible to "snoop" on SMS messages sent by customers of Verizon in the US, by exploiting a flaw in their web site. See link. |
