pigeons help to bring the olympics to london

as part of the mayor of london’s bid for the olympics in 2012, he has painted the “back the bid” logo on some of the city’s buses. the reasoning being that the buses are a world-wide recognisable icon of london.

the few remaining pigeons in trafalgar square after cuddly ken’s (the mayor) ban on feeding pigeon%20in%20waistcoat them and hence greatly reducing their numbers are equally as iconic. I propose fitting out these birds in little cotton waistcoats with the colours and slogan of the olympic bid. not only would they look cute but the little darlings look freezing cold at the moment.

it’s not like the fat little things are going to fly anywhere somewhere soon.

I really and truly do not understand how you can have any sympathy for those skanky, manky creatures, po.

Still, there's merit in making them work for their dinner!
salachair, Jan 25 2005

they have always been one of my favourite birds, truly! although crows are probably top of the list and gannets are quite cute too but you don't get many of them in south london.
po, Jan 25 2005

I don't like the gannet. They wet their nests.
Top piccy [FJ]!

I'll see your pigies, and raise you 2,000,000 Canada Geese! +
blissmiss, Jan 26 2005

No, you're right, that would be an amazing ability. If pigeons could, just by flying, make a place previously referred to as anywhere become "somewhere", that would be an amazing power indeed. That would be like turning just about anybody into a somebody!

hey Johnnie. I am chuffed (pleased)

Glad to be of assistance, pigeon-po.

A quote from your link shows this idea is quite doable: "Pigeons are still sometimes used as messengers. For example, medical workers on an island in France put blood samples into the tiny pockets of a vest worn by a pigeon. The pigeon then flies the blood samples to the mainland."

       wow.

pigeons are so undervalued! I have decided to devote the rest of my life to researching these wonderful creatures and I have handed in my notice for my present job (under-estimated as I am) and dumping all emotional attachments...

       I will be back, possibly...

       Next...pogeions.

[po] You're not that daft old dingbat who wanders around Kingston with a granny trolley full of bread actually feeding these beaked vermin, are you? If so, I'd like to talk to you about the paintwork on my car.
Actually, pigeons /are/ undervalued - I can buy a brace at my butchers for less than a fiver.
AbsintheWithoutLeave, Feb 04 2005

who you calling a daft old dingbat?
po, Feb 04 2005

About my paintwork...it's covered in beak and claw marks from having handfuls of bread thrown over it whilst parked near the Spring Grove.
AbsintheWithoutLeave, Feb 04 2005

I tend to throw stale bread into my hedge for any bird that comes along - generally sparrows though. I don't leave bread anywhere else as it encourages rats.

       TW7?
po, Feb 04 2005

But you do have a granny trolley, in Kingston...?
AbsintheWithoutLeave, Feb 04 2005

       not telling <nah, nah, nah>

ah that Spring Grove! <makes note to include it on my route> what colour is your car again? white with orange go-faster stripes was it?
po, Feb 04 2005

orange go-faster stripes and a blue light.
AbsintheWithoutLeave, Feb 04 2005

       oops!
