The rules are the same as standard chess except

1) no en passant and castling . 2) a pawn can move one space any vertical/horizontal direction and can take in all 4 diagonals .

As I see it , these rules would enable walls of cross-linked pawns to form . A strategy of sacrifice would be needed to forge the wall .

Did you mean 'force the wall'?

to forge - to move forward slowly and steadily <the ship forged ahead through heavy seas>

forge (v): To give form or shape to, especially by means of careful effort.

I'm curious as to why you deleted my question about the knight's ability to jump across a row of pawns [wjt] ?
xenzag, Oct 27 2007

xenzag, I imagine it is because it highlights a fatal flaw in this argument.

It's true... petty - (it's en passant by the way [wjt])

It will be quite a bit harder for a knight to safely jump over a line of pawns if they are capable of attacking in all eight directions.

Knights move over an area of about six squares at a time, so there would have to be a hole in the line (or an unprotected pawn to take out, or a way to threaten the pawns enough to keep them from attacking) for the knight to get through without being taken.

I wonder if this would affect the scoring of pieces any. I suspect it would, since in effect, your pawns would now be almost as mobile as your king, and nearly equal to going toe-to-toe against a knight.

Halfbaked curiousness , I didn't delete your question . The knight would be a more valuable piece to get past a blockade but depending on the pattern , suicidal attacks (like in real war) would have to be employed . A pawn still could be promoted . Moves would have to be spent setting up the best pawn pattern though and your opponent may go for better territory . Yes , probably baked in some form of fairy chess .

Too strong these pawns. It reminds me of a family where the kids have clearly dominated their parents on all fronts and remain unappreciative amongst their videogames and powerwheels. Unless you want to up some other powers, make the knights leap a larger 'L', perhaps.

Yeah, they had some staying power that groupafellas.

I think only four directions were proposed for attacking.
