Not simple, alimentary, My dear Watson. http://images.googl...%3D1I7WZPA%26sa%3DX

Any thoughts on a) how you're going to get enough helium into a pill to do anything? Given that the critcal temperature for liquid helium is something like 5K, you can't store helium densely in anything other than a Dewar. A pressure vessell capable of storing helium at liquidus densities won't be safe to swallow (if it's even possible at all with existing materials, as I suspect it may not be). Maybe it's soluble, like hydrogen, in some fairly benign substance, at a decent pressure/density ratio - but I'd like to hear how you're going to do it.

       b) explain how swallowing a pill is going to fill your lungs with helium?

I'll leave c) through, oh I dunno, maybe s) somewhere, up to your imagination.

       not simple.

I feel obliged to point out that helium ingestion would take the skill of burp speaking to a whole new level. Currently the bass voice produced by most brup speech is suitable only for "Luke, I am your father." Treble tones would be possible with the maneuver put forth here.

Helium has an unusually low solubility in water, being about twenty-five times less soluble than xenon and four hundred times less so than oxygen. The only way i can think of doing this is to have some strong but soluble shell around pressurised helium.
You can move gases between lungs and stomach via the pharynx with a closed velum - it's not so hard. You might have more luck with sulphur hexafluoride, but you might also end up suffocating and it would go deep rather than high.

//strong but soluble shell around pressurised helium//

It's all about the gas laws. Let's say you can swallow a pill with 2 millileters volume - that's reasonable, you prolly wouldn't want much more in one pill. Let's say you need 2 litres gas volume to produce a definite high pitch voice. That means you need to compress the gas to 1000 ATM, which is a lot by the way. That's 15 000 PSI, about 5 times what a SCUBA tank will do (yes, it's all order of magnitude estimates, don't correct me with "it's actually 5.23"). It's hard to make tanks for storing this kind of pressure.

I'd be scared to have little 15ksi bombs in my gullett, slowly dissolving away. I very much doubt you could a) find a suitable soluble, nontoxic "tank" material for storing these kinds of pressures. and b) survive the high power explosion that would result from one of them rupturing.

The larger the volume you're willing to ingest, the lower the pressure can be. If we were to stick to the two litre assumption, and if you were willing to swallow 10ml worth of these pills (that's 5large tablets) - you could get the pressure down to that of a SCUBA tank, if that makes you feel any safer.

What about shape? A spaghetti strand containing compressed gas?

The expanding gas freezing your tounge might produce interesting sounds too. But isn't that easier achieved by just ripping it out?
loonquawl, Feb 12 2009

There could be an exothermic reaction to heat the gas before it expands, but it wouldn't help much because it wouldn't be realistic to heat it above the boiling point of water.
Concerning the link, [jutta], i could choose to link to somewhere even more appropriate, but i'm a little scared to do so because i'm actually a member of that forum and i'd be outing myself.

//There could be an exothermic reaction//

this would real fun to synchronize with the 1000atm release - roast then frost, or frost[_]burn?

Advanced Lethality Options: The exothermic reaction could be of chlorine&mercury or somesuch, the capsule made from enriched uranium, and the triggering be done by ... uh... sharks with lasers?

Right, that does it, i'm gonna go there. Here's my link, search for the users, and yes i will delete it if anyone wants.
