The only appeal to having a short lawn is that all of the grass apears uniform and all pointing in the same direction. Perhaps a semi-waterproof gel or pomade could be devised that could be raked through lawns to create a variety of stylish effects.

       Au contraire: it is quite possible to make stylish effects and even pictures using short lawns. The New York Times had an article on it a while back.   

       [It seems to me there ought to be a website for mown lawn art for all those weekend mowers out there. Anyone interested?]
