since i gather that the next (g3) generation of mobile phones will incorporate gps location info, i propose that the phones could easily inform their users of the whereabouts of the nearest phone box

Or if the phone is rapidly moving, have it shut itself off.

I'm not sure I'd like to be in a 'phone box which was moving rapidly. Sounds like it's in the middle of a lahar, or tied to a large truck or the like.

Having said that, this idea is truly halfbaked. It's impractical, pointless and just to the lsft of centre. Well done djwilson!

Am I missing something, or is this just another one of those "dehydrated water" or "solar-powered flashlight" ideas (albeit at least an original one)?

You ain't missin' a thing my friend, unless I am too.
I think it's just a little irony working its way to the surface.

If it can tell where you are then perhaps it can send text updates to all your friends and save you from having to announce it to the world everytime you use the phone on the bus.

GPS on a phone. That actually is a good idea but not for the reason you mentioned. Who needs those expensive systems in the cars. Just put them on the phone.
