Scales are great tools in the kitchen, once you get used to using them. But mine is kind of big, and the numbers are on the front. This takes up counter space, and I have to squat down to read the numbers.
I was thinking that when I redo the kitchen, I would set a very strong cleat into the wall
that would accept the handle of a strong wooden pizza-paddle kind of deal. Then I could just set the scale on that and get it up there closer to eye level.
The I thought, why not put the scale into the wall? Not my scale, of course, but one designed by Very Clever People who know how to make a scale that will give you the weight of an object set in the middle of the paddle through the magic of the torque-o-meter in the wall.
When not in use, the paddle would hang up on the wall out of the way. When you need it you would just sock it into the wall. Springy ball bearing and notch technology would tell you when it was seated properly.
The readout could be right above the socket, or where ever you wanted to wire up a separate unit. It would have all of the controls and a tare setting.

The big problem is placing the item on just the right spot of the paddle since weight is torque times distance. I think it would be easier to either do a spring scale on the wall with a 90 degree stand off or a fold away hanging scale under a cabinet. |

My mum always had a wall mounted scale in her kitchen. It was great - out of the way but always available just by flipping down the cover (which doubled up as a bowl). |

There's plenty of similar things on the market today -except that they're digital and shiny (link). I may have to buy one for my next kitchen. |

Why all this messing around with wall-mounted and stuff?
Just build the load cells into a section of the kitchen bench, with a flush-mounted digital display and a zeroing button near the front edge of the bench. |
