I was looking at the jewelry adverts and was amazed at the intricacy and types of chain links .

This got me wondering whether magnetic coil electronics and magnets could be geometrically placed in the links so that with the flick of a switch the chain would go solid .

?of use?

I don't know about links, but it's possible to join a series of rods or beads threaded on a common strand (of whatever) so that when the strand is pulled the series becomes rigid. There are childrens' toys like that. No electricity required.

Only for a given value of rigid.

Wondering whether something could be done is the same as inventing it.

The Indian rope trick guys probably baked this. Mentioning magnets is just more magic. [-]

[phoenix], could you give me some hints on how to find those toys you mention, please?

So, not a unit of area equal to 156816 square inches?

[Amos Kito] beat me to the link, but that's what I was thinking of. If the sections were short enough, you could emulate a chain pretty well.

As for uses, well you could make a ladder than turns into a puddle on command. How about (and I'm going to regret this) a tent that sets itself up?

If you place a P-N-P electronic gate in close spacial proximity to a N-P-N gate is there a magic 'magnetic' interaction ?

If yes then (hi tech lab measurement of how much)

Having a a surface of these interactions could make a very strong bond . The bond would be even stronger if some of the planes of close proximity were at various angles such as with the geometric shapes of chain links .

if no - my idea is wrong , sorry to take up your time .

I thought the government was developing a certain type of material that contracts like a human muscle when a current flows through it. I think this chain would be kinda like that, right?

       [the truth is out there]
