Most of us have been on roller coasters, I'm thinking the kind with tubular rails. Yes, you see where I'm going with this. I live 35 miles out of the city I work in but I drive through two towns on the way. Why not have a coaster from town to town. You would ride in a four or six person "cab". The technology is already developed, It would take a small land footprint, It would be energy efficient, It could be on standby at all hours because it would be automated, and it's proven safe.

If you're going to build that infrastructure, can I tag along? Land_20luge_20commuter_20lanes

What sort of fall rate would be needed to coast 35 miles? Thats a large climb or acceleration at your starting town. Two tracks or scary passing lines?

Hm... sounds fun, but wildly impractical. (neutral) I'm pretty sure the most efficient rail-based public transportation system is already in use. It's called a light rail. Portland, Oregon has a very efficient light rail system in place. I researched this a few months ago when I first had the idea to move there, and I still am planning to when I save enough money. Commuter trains are another common travel solution for those who live in suburbs and outlying towns. I'll post a link to a Wiki article on the subject.

We have a light rail where I live - the Docklands Light Railway. It's undergoing tremendous expansion, growth and change right now, but at other times it works quite well.
Ian Tindale, Jun 26 2009

The Docklands Light is mentioned in the Wiki article I posted. Aparently, it's one of the few Light Rail systems to use an electrified third rail instead of overhead lines. Better watch your step, Ian!

I think we've done this. Twice. UnaBubba. Both times.

       [marked-for-deletion] close enough?
jutta, Jun 26 2009

I'm not sure the one in your link is quite the same as this, Jutta. Unabubba's idea has more of an extreme sportish quality to it, I think. This one doesn't seem to involve being yanked off your feet or being dropped onto an airbag. I'll have to look for the other UB idea you mentioned... I do think it's Baked by Light Rail Systems, though.

You don't have to look very hard - the link in the first idea points to the second.

As for different accents, yeah, I guess. Let's see what the poster had in mind.
