In a number of countries reading your monthly electric bills is still done manually. If a digital photograph could be taken of your electric metres transmitted to office computers which then read and give a print out of monthly bill

Annotation:

If you're looking for a way to eliminate the meter-reader, I'd say baked:

There are already a number of products on the market that communicate directly with each meter by way of the power line and send usage back to the electric company for billing.

Retrofitting a meter with a digital camera, and using automatic interpreting software is too fragile and open to fraud (paste a photoshopped picture of the meter over the real one and save money).
