I was confusing battery and capacitor . |

The surface where electrons are placed is initially a large area in a volume therefore low voltage needed to place the little objects ( they have lots of field space , don't run into each other ) . |

When the surface is folded , the electrons lose field freedom and increase voltage . |

The voltage gain in Van Degraf machine if collector area suddenly reduces by half ( maybe by sliding one half of collector under other half ) . |

I think this could work, but the other way
round. I half-remember a demonstration
in physics where you start with two bit
sheets of aluminium foil separated by a
plastic sheet to form a capacitor. You put
a few volts across it to charge them, then
pull them apart. The capacitance
decreases but the charge remains
constant, so the voltage between the two
sheets of foil increases hugely. |
