An online matchmaker service where potential mentors woulds list the things they are an expert at and potential students would list what they are looking to learn, or what sort of guidance they would like, the amount of hands on teaching* they are looking for, and their general location.

*I meant actual in person teaching with a few exceptions

Just for you -- because I like your ideas! [reensure, Mar 31 2002]

Annotation:

Everyone needs a mentor. I know I do.

Yeah its hard to find one through regular channels. Should you pick up mentors the same way you would dates? Going up to an old man in a bar and asking him to teach you everything he knows might lead to some awkward misunderstandings.

I think I'd be staying away from anyone who offered 'hands on' teaching.

Unless you were specificly seeking a Don Juan or Juanita-like mentor to gain sexual experience.

Around these here parts they call it: school.

On the other hand, if it's sexual schoolin' yer lookin' fer, I believe I'm yer man. I got me a whack o' experience, yessir. Tell you what, if you need a penile implant, I'll give you one. I'll give you a penile implant like YOU WON'T BELIEVE, bobby boy.

       Let's do some learnin'.

Although mentoring and mentoring for money are baked, thats not my idea. My idea is an online student/mentor matchmaker service which is most defintly not baked.

This would be free the only thing the mentor would be getting is the satisfaction of molding someone in there image.

If you had to compare it to anything it would be like one of those big brother programs, but it would be drastically different in that it wouldnt be simply a male precence to play sports with the child. It would be a service that searches for somone who is an expert in the field of knowledge you want to learn about. Whether that be how to be a rock star, how to master the flying crane kick, or how to make the next chaos theory.

It would be completly free, it would keep the old wise people busy, and wouldnt be just some silly service where some guy takes a kid whom he has nothing particular in common with to baseball games because the kid thinks he cant do any better.

Well maybe it could be run through the government then, a backgound check could be done first on anyone who wanted to mentor someone who wasnt of legal age.

Hmm... Mentor wanted: needs to have specific experience in embezzlement, bank robbery, and safe cracking...

i like the idea of having several mentors--- i wouldnt want to be the exact duplicate of someone i admire- i would want my own individuality to shine through--- so maybe have the option of having several mentors and having like appointements booked in with them-- . like baking a cake with your best chef mentor---
