an autonomous submersible that is essentially a slightly maneuverable bouy is attached to a boat . the pod bouy contains or can contain the contraband payload.

should the payload need to be abandoned due to 'discovery' or some other overwhelming force, the uav-bouy is deployed with it to depth.

bouy/submarine can be programmed with instructions to deliver the payload to a short distance away without being detected or simply to remain put and await further instructions. or to meet at a location that is determined.

this could be an excellent smuggling tool. deployable by ship or by plane.

Is that you Pete? Sorry, a college roommate and I once had a long conversation once about how we could smuggle drugs into the country without getting arrested. My solution was to get decommisioned torpedoes and convert them into long distance delivery craft. Once they arrive, they would surface and signal for pickup.

But I never posted, so (+).

I once read that torpedoes were used during Prohibition to smuggle booze.

Though not quite UAVs, there have been serveral seizures of drugs from makeshift "submarines".
