Idea 1)
have dug channels/roads that direct a tornado to a large chained spinable weight that sucks the energy from the tornado.(may even generate some electricity)
Idea 2)
have a supersonic jet (fighter?) disrupt the tornado with a supersonic boom or even more dangerous a fly thru. FEMA - Safe Rooms

Both ideas are woefully inadequate to deflect the power of a tornado: channels and roads evidently have negligible impact on the path of a tornado, and a sonic boom would have no obvious effect even if a fighter could be scrambled in time to intercept the tornado. |
|
| |
The jet thing might work but I think the problem with the Channels is that they are based on the weather patterns not which way the water flows. The problem is predicting them you would have to have a jet ready at all times just incase. And it would need to be huge to change the weather pattern enough to matter. And well armored (anti cow). |

So the resistance/shape of the ground on the apex of the tornado doesn't effect the direction of the tornado? . My thinking was a channel /duct in the ground to direct the apex of the tornado - could be used as a service duct in normal seasons.
man can make some huge "dams" when theres money up for grabs |

If the Plane boom /explosive worked then the planes could be stationed closer to known areas. |
|
| |
Neither suggestion will work. Tornadoes do not follow channels or ground features, and even if they did, a spinnable weight will not 'suck' the energy. A sonic boom would have no effect whatsoever on a tornado, neither would a jet fly-through (which are done in weather studies). |

What about lots of nondairy creamer and a torch? |
|
| |
What about a dummy trailer park,
to act as bait? |
|

//Tornadoes do not follow channels or ground features// |
|

Prevailing wind directions are the primary determinant of direction, but the surface does contribute/ detract from the tornado's power. For example, rising damp air over water adds power, but the tornado peters out eventually over land. |

[Waugs] is right with his conclusion that there's nothing practical that one can do to a macro weather feature. |
|
| |
Also, there's nothing much that can be done to completely prevent tornado damage. |
|
| |
We should turn our attention to cheap and simple ways to make home structures more survivable. |
|
| |
As for trailer parks, I'd suggest the each unit would have 6' by 6' by 6' shelter dug under the trailer covered by a thin but carefully constructed steel lid and an adjoining trap door to the trailer above or close by the front door. The hole could be dug by backhoe and a standard lid fitted and held down by a central 15' foundation spike. There would need to be a ventilation and inspection panel and a security seal to prevent unauthorised use as storage. |
|
| |
As far as I can tell, this would be the fastest and cheapest refuge possible and it would be applicable to any location without a high water table or surface groundwater. |
|
| |
Perhaps money can be saved by having a communal shelter on every street corner. The problem would be having an entrance that admits people but doesn't endagner those already inside when they open the door to let others in. |
|
| |
What would happen if you detonated a Daisy Cutter, or some variant thereon, in the eye of the twister, fairly high up? With all the implosion-explosion whatnot that occurs with such a device, could it appreciably disrupt the tornado's flow? |
|
| |
Sorry, I still can't see how a column of circular rushing
air mass can't be effected by a large push of air from some form of explosion or wash from a fighter plane.
but anyway,
to be real, Nature has too few bites on the human population and Insurance companies need a game. |

Angular momentum. A *LOT* of angular momentum. |

You mean it's not Superman? |

I thought a similar "tordraino" idea was posted on these pages sometime last year. |

since tornadoes are caused by extremes of interaction of warm- and cold- fronts and high- and low- pressure pockets, how about a giant heater (say, in the sky) and a giant air conditioner (in the sky) to make the air less "combatant"...? |

bris: thinking of thumbwax's hurricane idea, by any chance?
morpheus: you might try zapping the top sides of supercells from space-based microwave platforms, but those things are a major no-no under current treaties. |
