Anti-sleeping Glasses   (+6, -8)  [vote for, against]
Since there's been such a huge rash of alarm and anit-sleeping ideas, I thought I'd add one more to the mix.

Glasses or sunglasses that detect if your eyes are closed for more than two seconds. If you close your eyes for longer than that, you get a squirt of cold water in each eye.

The water comes through a long, flexible hose running from the end of the arm (which is hollow) to a pouch on your belt.

That would keep me awake. But why not go to sleep when you need it so badly? People don't perform well when sleep deprived.

Sometimes you don't necessarily realize how badly you *need* to rest, especially when you've been on the road driving for a long time, until it's too late. This lets you know you need to pull over or stop doing whatever it is you're doing while keeping you alert enough to get to the next rest area safely.

OK!

I know someone who is so irritatingly dull and slow that each time they blink their eyes stay closed for about 4 seconds. This wouldn't work for them, but on the other hand it would be very funny.

I'm pretty sure these exist, or existed. I read about them in the Reader's Digest in about 1979. They did something like shock the wearer when they blinked for longer than the usual time, and they were for driving.

//their eyes stay closed for about 4 seconds.//

Then this is exactly what that person needs. 4 seconds without seeing what's happening on the road is a very long time, and very dangerous.

I am for anything that can help me stay awake while driving. I live in Vermont, commute a hour each way, and right now its dark at 4:12. I'd also couple this idea with a camelback filled with coffee or Jolt. [+]

Squirt coffee or Jolt in your eyes...? Oh, I get it! Drink the coffee/Jolt and squirt the water. That does sound like a winning combination!
