I'd like to suggest two improvements in the interface:

1) When clicking on New while browsing a category (as opposed to a specific idea), the idea lands in the category, just like it does when you actually click into another idea.

2) When categories have sub categories, it would be great to be able to navigate that tree from the top right category display

It worked, Jutta! You have to be browsing in the sub-category you want it in, but you don't have to click an idea in that subcategory to put a new one there. Just go into the subcategory and click "add" at the top left of the screen.

Clicked on home:pet:cat:food category. Now where is the [up] link or ability to click on say the :pet: part ?

2) would be 'nice to have', as they say, but not me, I'd put it slightly higher as 'useful sometimes'.
