Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia Tire   (-1)  [vote for, against]
Get your tires wet & watch them grow new tread!

Fabricate a tire that grows new tread like a "Chia-Pet" when it gets wet. Must be durable to withstand the constant torture of the highway surface.

This would be perfect in wet climates where you need tread for traction!

Come on now! Throw me a bone! It's still on the recent list! [bungston, Oct 06 2004]

Tire magic?
-- DrCurry, Nov 04 2003

Somehow I don't *really* think that cress (alright pedants, Salvia Columbariae) is going to be hard-wearing or give good traction. Just a gut feeling, mind you.

Although is you drove too slowly it could attract vast hordes of rabbits. Squish!

Don't they have problems with rabbits in Austraila?
-- my-nep, Nov 05 2003

[bungston] - I would suggest this is a different idea. I understood it as a tyre where the tread depth increased when wet, so that you get the performance benefit of slick tyres in the dry and the safety benefit of deeply treaded tyres in the wet. As such it is an eminently sensible idea.

Now how does it work?

Right you are, [suct]. Perhaps the same technology that allows those small sponge capsules to grow into dinosaurs etc when soaked could be used for the Chia Tire.

what is the seed were programed to grow their grass in a pattern that would form a tire tread.

Ilove that tune!
