I propose a system of chips embedded in roadways and paved areas that digitally control the speed limit of the automobiles traveling on them. There would be a law stating that all cars had to be manufactured wiht these or have these installed within two months. There could be an emergency override linked to emergency operators. The wife is having her baby? Just call 911, and the operator will let you speed up. This could also be an anti-theft system. If your car is stolen, they simply send out a nation wide signal that disables your car from moving at all. One other thing: you could embed a sensor in your driveway that announces when someone pulls in, gives you their car's serial number, and their name. How about an anti-fender-bender system in parking lots? When you are about to run into a car, because you can't see over the hood to well, the system automatically applies the brakes. There is a huge realm of uses and benefits from this thing!-- fogfreak, Dec 20 2001 Speed restriction http://www.guardian...3604,425344,00.html [stupop, Dec 20 2001] One that tracks my car wherever it went? No way, man!-- neelandan, Dec 20 2001 Why not enhance it with a link to your bankaccount. You can pay for parking this way automatically.
When it comes to speed limitation I can imagine no one would like it. Trucks are already mounted with those here in Holland - they object heavily because they cannot adjust to the traffic situation when taking over other trucks. A better solution would be to allow every speed AND automatically charge you with speeding tickets if you exceed the speed limit. Maybe you can have a small console fitted in your car showing your financial balance so far.-- spekkie, Dec 20 2001 If you move this to 'car:speed' it can share a space with all the other 'so similar as it be indistinguisable on a dark night' ideas that we have on limiting a car's speed.
Fishbone: for exploring a topic already too heavily mined without adding any excitement.-- st3f, Dec 20 2001 This isn't only halfbaked, it's being widely considered in the real world.-- pottedstu, Dec 20 2001 WAY too much invasion of privacy.
