Drain the Gulf   (+4, -5)  [vote for, against]
No, Really.

Whip up a quick dam, drain the Gulf, toss any fish and turtles over the wall, drive down to the hole, cork the sucker, clean up excess oil, plant a couple of ferns to look good for the publicity pics, let the water back in, get back home in time to watch McGuyver re-runs.

How Long is This Gonna Take? [Grogster, Jun 30 2010]

yeah! and then lets build a bridge to mars!
-- Voice, Jun 29 2010

As my friend Brian once suggested, "Why don't we build an underground tunnel to the Moon?"
-- Alx_xlA, Jun 29 2010

a bridge to mars you say? hmmmmm
-- ComatoseSheep, Jun 29 2010

OK, first catch your Tiger - any thoughts on how to "whip up a quick dam"? How long did it take to build the Panama canal, and extrapolating from that, how long would it take to enclose, and then drain the Gulf of Mexico? If we did that, we might as well dig a whole bunch of other wells while we're down there, get them all to spew out loads of oil and presto, a nice big oil reservoir from which you could just scoop out as much lovely oil as you wanted.
-- zen_tom, Jun 29 2010

Good question, [zen_tom]... Inject the appropriate chemicals into the spew, mount the appropriate laboratory equipment upstream, turn the ejecta into a Styrofoam slurry. As it comes up the pipe point it where you want the dam. Styrofoam expands and hardens as the dam builds itself into what will look from space like a giant beer cooler.

Very, very, very fast-growing coral ?

Drill a hole under the Gulf through the earth, and when all the oil and water flows down into Australia, let them handle it.
-- DrWorm, Jun 29 2010

Not real practical, but this just got me thinking about the entire gulf as a tidal generation power plant. Florids to Cuba to the Yucatan Peninsula looks to be only about 400 miles.

try using [xenzag]'s 2 drain tub!
-- xandram, Jun 29 2010

There are several orders of magnitude worth of wrong in this idea.

Granted, General Custer was not the only guy to suffer from a malformed sense of scale... it seemed a perfect plan in my bathtub.
