Public: Waste Disposal: Garbage Collection
Driver's side trash bin   (+9)  [vote for, against]
Logical, yet strangely absent.

At strategically-placed locations, like picnic areas, gas stations and car parks, have a pullout lane at the exit which takes the vehicle past a large garbage container conveniently placed at average driver's window level.

Optionally, recycling bins could also be provided.

The important point is that the container is positioned at the driver's window, allowing the terminally indolent single occupier to dispose of waste in a tidy way.

This is actually a very good idea. I've checked and it's by [8th], but it's still a very good idea.

This Idea appears to be assuming that there is only one lane of traffic into and out of the relevant area. If there are two lanes, then I can foresee some problems with putting trash cans in the middle of the road.
-- Vernon, Apr 07 2016

//<Readdresses [MB]'s birthday present to Sturton>// If it's another one of those self-assembly capybaras he's welcome to it. I'm still working on the last one - that sachet of glue they include is hopeless, and I've mislaid a pancreas somewhere.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Apr 07 2016

// If there are two lanes, //

... there will still be the special single pullout lane, separate from the main departure lane, which rejoins the main lanes - via a give way - after the trash can.

Imagine a drive-thru window, but for dumping trash.

// another one of those self-assembly capybaras //

No, it isn't. They were on special offer... ours was equally disappointing, one leg was missing and that third ear just doesn't quite look right where we attached it, altho it does help him to hear anything creeping up from behind.

No... you remember you wanted some real Venetian gondolas for the Second North-East Ornamental Lake ?
-- 8th of 7, Apr 07 2016

Now you mention it, I do remember. Well, in that case I take back all those things I said about you. And the things I posted on Wikileaks. And that satirical documentary. And the criminal investigation regarding the tangerines. The stuff about Thursday afternoons, though, that stays.

//Venetian gondolas for the Second North-East Ornamental Lake ?//

Are they the delicate clinker-built gondolas that sink when you twist the rod? Never saw the appeal myself.
-- bs0u0155, Apr 07 2016

On a cold, windy day, inform an elderly relative that their insulin kit is on that small island in the lake, and the only way to retrieve it is by gondola.

Oh, how we laughed …
-- 8th of 7, Apr 08 2016

Looks like someone already tossed in the "i" of the word dispose.
-- xenzag, Apr 08 2016

Sp. fixed.
-- 8th of 7, Apr 08 2016

Does that mean you climbed in to retrieve it?
-- xenzag, Apr 08 2016

//Logical, yet strangely absent// Perhaps the absence is due a regional difference, or a temporal one - drive-ins are less common than they were 50 years ago - or the result of just not getting out enough. Big trash bins with plastic chutes extending over the curb [see link] strategically placed in their exit lanes are a franchise standard feature of such eateries everywhere I’ve been in the US.

I have distant memories of ranks of them along the exit lanes of drive-in movie theatres, but that staple of Americana (and, I gather from ‘70s exploitation movies, Australiana) are nearly extinct now.

Yes, WKTE.

The idea is that these devices should be installed at many public places- mall car parks, roadside rest areas and the the like.
-- 8th of 7, Apr 08 2016

I've seen these at some coffee shop drive-thru lanes.
-- tatterdemalion, Apr 09 2016

Simply toss your trash out where you would like a drive thru can positioned, along with a brochure for can shown in the link or similar.

Continue to toss daily until they install the can or you are arrested. ( Perhaps they need cans at the courthouse. )
-- popbottle, Apr 09 2016

//Simply toss your trash out where you would like a drive thru can positioned, along with a brochure for can shown in the link or similar// I see a lot of impromptu protest/civil improvement like this in the form of shopping bags tied to bus stop signs posts. When enough full bags festoon the posts, somebody collects them, though I’ve no idea they from the bus agency, state road maintenance, or the neighborhood.

Print the “put a trashcan here!” flyer on the shopping bag and give the bags away in public displays – seems like good community activism to me.

That's the Dutch liqueur made with eggs and sugar, isn't it ?
-- 8th of 7, Apr 10 2016

Oh... an [MB] annotation seems to have gone missing...
-- 8th of 7, Apr 10 2016

I had pointed out the injustice of [mfd]ing this idea on the grounds of advocacy. However, I then noticed //[t]he idea is that these devices should be installed //, which looks, regrettably, very much like an advocaat to me.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Apr 10 2016

Voted + without even needing to read the idea. (Garbage holder inside the car on the driver's side) Then read CraigD's link and found out that it was an equally good idea, but not what I thought.

No, it's the base ingredient in guacamole.
-- ytk, Apr 11 2016

Ah, gondolas. I tried sculling once - had to strip down, get in the water and tow the boat while swimming to get back upwind to the dock.

I feel there needs to be a graph, with three lines:

Civilization progress over the last 20 years.

Civilization progress had civilization implemented the more implementable HB ideas.

Civilization progress had civilization indiscriminately implemented all HB ideas.
-- bs0u0155, Sep 20 2017

The last graph will need a negative -going Heaviside step function ...
