Laser cat hat   (+10, -1)  [vote for, against]
hat with built in lasers

a small cat sized hat with built in laser pointer. It always will entertain the cat and always be in their field of vision.

Puurrrrfect for those bored kitties.

not a hat, but same idea. [jaksplat, Sep 26 2011]

If you could get your cat to wear a hat...that would be the thing.

[The Alterother] has taped many things to cats' heads (mostly while assisting in veterinary procedures) and can state quite confidently that it is an endeavor suited only for the foolish or the well-trained.

A sufficiently light-weight attachment to a collar might be more feasible. Despite my initial disappointment that this was not a delightful new Borg-harrassment device, I love the idea of a cat-propelled cat toy. [+]

// cats can rip loosely fitting collars off //

Then you need to adjust thier collars until they fit properly. That way kitty is comfortable while she's going bonkers over the laser dot that she's too f#€%ing stupid to figure out is coming from the little thing dangling from her well-fitted collar.

Opinion: cats are overrated. Primarily by themselves.

My cat would immediately use the laser to blind me.
-- DIYMatt, Sep 22 2011

// duct taping the hat to the cat's head //

Nail gun.

// adjust thier collars until they fit properly //

Easy to tell when the collar is tight enough - the heartbeat stops.

You're getting predictable...
-- Alterother, Sep 22 2011

"Resistance is futile ..."

It would be better of the laser pointer blinked off whenever it sensed a sharp acceleration. That way, the cat could "stalk" the dot, but every time it pounced, the dot would vanish, only to appear a few seconds later somewhere nearby.

Can cats experience a psychotic break, we wonder ...

8th, careful, that was almost a nice idea...
-- daseva, Sep 22 2011

I was also going to employ "bobble-head" technology, so the laser dot would flicker and bob around based on the cat moving it's head

Can there be an option to rack the power up to, say, 30 or 40 watts?
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Sep 22 2011

// Can cats experience a psychotic break, we wonder ... //

Considering that a cat is more or less psychotic to begin with, I'm going to say this may be a moot question.
-- Alterother, Sep 22 2011

I'd have thought a staple gun would be sufficient...
-- Grogster, Sep 22 2011

....why is this beginning to remind of a cat-sized version of the laser sight in the Predator flicks?
-- not_morrison_rm, Sep 23 2011

Small machine screws, dental acrylic, and a Dremel drill. You don't need a scalpel and periosteal elevator: a razor blade and a butter knife will do.
-- mouseposture, Sep 23 2011

oh then, // bored kitties// means the hole is already in their head?

Shades of Bonsai Kittens...I loved that page. And the people who thought it was serious.
-- normzone, Sep 23 2011

Perhaps one could give the kitty a perm and use a strip of Velcro to attach the laser? This may be less permanent than some of the other suggestions. After all there are many other things that could be attached to a kitty’s head. A bottle opener would be helpful while a flaming torch merely decorative.
-- saedi, Sep 25 2011

// a flaming torch merely decorative. //

... but not if it were attached to, for instance, a cartridge of Thermite. Then it would be VERY useful.
-- 8th of 7, Sep 25 2011

//Then it would be VERY useful// At burning your house down. While the cat somehow walked away unharmed.
-- DIYMatt, Sep 25 2011

That presupposes a cat at liberty in [8th_of_7]'s house.
