Oval wheel off-roading   (+2)  [vote for, against]
For when old school just isn't enough

Swap those Dakars for a set of oval wheels, each wheel set a quarter turn from the others, and take things to a whole new level.

Ummm, isn't this to give you the off-road experience while actually ON the road?

Offroad it might actually compensate for terrain and provide a smooth ride.

Just flat-spot your tires a couple of times and you will get that same effect.

Only if the terrain has been perfectly sculpted so that the contours conform to the rotation of the oval wheels. Otherwise it will only make things worse.

Many people have the understandable misapprehension that the key to off-road driving is to get a truck with great big tires and drive over stuff. It takes a bit of rude education and practical experience to understand why it's not that simple. I don't want to get into a diatribe here, so I'll cut straight to my point, which is that being able to feel every bump and contour under your tires is one of the key elements between getting there and just getting stuck, and that's only possible if the tires are radially uniform.
