Party wall heating unit   (+2)  [vote for, against]

Some houses have a "party wall" - a wall shared another dwelling.

In older dwellings, these walls are not particularly well provided with thermal insulation.

With the new BorgCo Party Wall heating system, this is not the disadvantage it might seem ...

The units consist of large panels - made in a range of convenient sizes, or to your exact requirements - which attach firmly to the party wall, which has been cleaned down to the substrate and coated with silicone grease. The metal face of the panel is one side of a Peltier-effect heatpump. A small, quiet fan circulates room air through the finned heatsink on the room side of the device, covered by a flat casing capable of accepting any decorative finish; discreet louvres top and bottom are the intake and exhaust for the airflow.

All the energy fed into the heatpump is discharged into the room, along with the energy "harvested" through the party wall - a huge saving !

This is probably the best idea to have come out of the Borg for the last... ever.

There is a risk of the neighbour applying the same tactic to neutralize the effect. For a row of terrace houses, you could sell the device to every other building, so that the affected homes wouldn't notice the imbalance.

For a high rise, a special underfloor heating could be sold to the top floor, then after it starts to take effect, it could be sold to the floor below, and so on all the way down.

By this point a new product could be developed for ground-floor residents in order to suck heat from the top floor, possibly involving surreptitiously installed ducts.

OK, how much do you want (as a percentage of the take) to keep quiet ?

What's really needed, shirley, is a National Heatpipe Grid, with a vast refrigeration network drawing heat from the tropical southern part of the UK to the frozen wastes of Scotland, to the advantage of both parties.

// both parties //

Eh ? Using scotchland as a heatsink is fine, but "both parties " ? There aren't any actual human people there to be a party to an agreement, except when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth goes to stay at Balmoral ... and that's only temporary.

Come now, [8th]. You know full well that I always spend the first two weeks of August at one or another of the Buchanan Scottish properties for the grouse shooting (get in early, is what I say). And there's a very nice gentleman who sends me salmon from there too.
