no tack walls   (+1)  [vote for, against]
put thin iron stips in wallboard so posters can be put up with magnets

If wallboard included thin and wide iron strips, magnets could be used to hang posters and picture. This would reduce wear and tear on walls from all the tack hole that need to be spackled and repainted.

Dry erase & magnetic receptive wall coverings http://www.walltalk...etic-receptive.html

Yeah, but a sticky wall would be impossible to keep clean.

I think it would be nice if you had specific wall regions outfitted like this. +

I wouldn't want all of my wall surfaces to be like this, though, as it would be very difficult to set an anchor to hang framed and heavy artwork.

For that, you could still have picture rails.
-- DrCurry, Jul 06 2003

I think picture rails are ugly. Especially the wires. I won't have them. They're for galleries and museums.
-- bristolz, Jul 06 2003

And prewar NYC apartment buildings. If you ever have one, don't knock the picture rails (or other moldings) down, even if you never use them.

I'm imagining metal strips that are about 1 mm thick and 4 cm wide.

Bedrooms for teenagers, dorm rooms and college town apartments would be ideal settings for this.

Radio Shack sells some great little magnets that would work well with these. If they had tiny little handles on them (like tacks do) that would be ideal.

The strips would have to be embedded well enough to not pull off under the force of the magnet, since you'd probably want to use strong little guys to hold things on the walls well.

I would have loved to do this to my walls, as I keep nailing stuff to them and the paint is pretty shitty already. Good one! +

Picture rails look silly in modern British houses because the ceilings are far too low (often as low as 8'), but in my house (built around 1870, with 10' 9" ceilings) the proportions of the rooms can handle them.

A few years ago I bought these posterboard-sized sticky-surfaces. Basically a huge reverse post-it note that you could hang any paper from.

How about strips of velcro loops on the walls and the hooked velcro glued to the back of whatever you're hanging?
-- TeaTotal, Jul 09 2003

Velcro might work, but it would be a little conspicuous and when it got filled with fluffy lint stuff, as it seems to inevitable always do, this could be a problem for long term use. But maybe...
